Teaching sewing skills at Anu

Every Wednesday morning, Karen Hansson from the Netherlands jumps in her car at 9am to be at the Anu Workshop in Janakiram Layout around 10. Carrying a big bag with her, filled with sewing stuff and even a sewing machine.

Anu is the workshop were women from the Janakiram layout found a job in making great looking bags, Ipad covers, belts and more from waist materials. They give tetra juice packs and rice bags a second life and doing so they earn a living for themselves and their families.

The bags are woven from the tetra packs and then go to a tailor, who makes the insides of the bags. And that’s where Karen comes along.

Every Wednesday morning she teaches Gowramma, Mahalakshmi and Sophia the first skills of sewing. Sewing straight lines, sewing zippers and eventually sewing the whole inside bags. So they won’t be dependent of an external tailor anymore in the future.

What is more beautiful for a community as Janakiram layout then being totally self sufficient in the end?
